This is going to be a post about my personal beliefs about productivity, sustainability, with a tinge of capitalist dread. I’m not going to substantiate these claims, but I have gone through the motions of outlining these beliefs as my own, so take that as you will! So with that, welcome. I might update and redraft this idea later, so please leave critiques comments and thoughts if you have any.

Whole heartedly doing something sucks! It’s unsustainable! A mentally taxing waste of calories! Putting everything you have into a project, series, job, relationship or anything is a great way to burn out and get the worst return on investment (your time) possible.

I want to do the one hand version of whatever I want to do.

I originally heard someone describe something as “the one armed version of ______” in a podcast between two dads giving a new father advice on how to keep reading while having a new born. The expert dad said to try doing the one arm version of what ever you were doing before. Do the easier thing if it means you keep doing it.

Try to think of it as banning yourself from metaphorically using both hands. I bet that it will result in fantastic results over the following year, and will tell me way more about myself then actively trying my best ever would.

This post is no exception from my goal of doing this everyday. I’m going to outline a couple points on how I plan to implement this new belief into my life. Hopefully this will help you do the same.

  • Ask for help to reduce workload. When the help is not available or possible, reduce your workload anyway.
  • Cut out at least 25% of things you need to do (try writing a list, then actively crossing things out with a pen)
  • Make imperfect things!
  • Accept dirty rooms, places, things and feelings.
  • Throw shit together regularly.

That’s really it! It’s a short one. Also, this is the 6th week in a row where I’ve made a blog post once a week!
