Introduction

Sometimes a good song is just a bunch of mics in a room. I feel like these songs all kind of have that energy to them. It’s a week that is what it seems.

This week was also heavily informed by a morning I spent getting some work done with my friend Shane, after a 4 hour coffee binge and being slightly under rested. It’s with that mindset that I found joy, and in that joy, I present my list of songs that might have you feel the same way.

As always, click on the album cover to go listen to the version of the song that I am basing this review and series of comments on. It’ll be a good time! Or at least, it certainly was for me.

The Songs!

Danny Schmidt – this too shall pass

This introduction feels like a song that would not make a medieval peasants head explode, but it quickly devolves into what feels like a baroque pop North Carolinian apocalyptic bard vibe fest. Its full of talk of god, and violin that feels decadent.

The weakerthans- Plea from a cat named virtue

This at first reminds me of what would happen if the mountain goats made an early 2000’s j rock album. I love every part of it. The story telling is vivid and funny. It’s possible that I like this song slightly more because I just got a cat, but even in my bias, the song writing is fantastic and feels effortlessly wonderful. “All you ever want to do is drink and watch tv”. What a melancholy line from a worried little friend. It’s that energy that makes this song wonderful.

First Aid Kit- Emmylou

This song has a full version that’s available to listen to, but something about this acoustic just feels fantastic. It’s the harmonies that fit together like glue, and the slide guitar, and the drummer shoved in the corner. It makes my heart happy.

Littlest Man Band- Always Sayin

This is one of those recordings where it feels to me like it was just a mic in a room. A rational part of my brain knows better, but everything feels like it was recorded just as it is. I imagine seeing this whole band live is an insane treat, and I really want to keep up with them.

Thank you and closing thoughts

As always, thank you for your time and thoughts. If you would like to show me any songs, I would love to take a listen. Have a great day!
