Songs I like this week:

This week, much like many other weeks, I listened to some songs that I thoroughly enjoyed, and here is a list of those songs. They are all, very much, a set of pop/ rock/ pop-rock jams with lyrics that have some moderate to more intensely dismal themes (if you feel my categorization is wrong, please feel free to reach out). Here is a shortlist of those songs, with a brief explanation of why I think they are great.

A boy named pluto – Hailey Knox

This song is a ride for the chorus alone. The verses are nice, but the chorus is just this beautiful request for love and attention, and the bridge feels like an extension of that. I first heard it while mindlessly going through a playlist and just heard this polite voice asking for Genevieve’s love, and I was so excited by this song about polite, gay, considerate, and intimate love. Little did I know, it was in fact, not very gay at all, but the polite, considerate and intimate ask for love is always appreciated

You make me feel- Easha

This song is an amazing acoustic song about crushing, that found its way into full production. The arrangement is light, with great use of space that lets the song move from section to section flawlessly, with quiet harmonies complementing sporadically. This is of course all going on as Easha is cooing over a surprising change of pace from the usual apathy.

I want wind to blow- The Microphones

This song is a case study on panning, layering, and the powers of well-thought acoustics. It drones on with the use of fuzz, warmth, distortion, sound design layered in the background, that forces your ears to perk up. It’s full of playful use of timing, with simple themes that are varied and repeated to a point where it feels easy to listen to, yet lilted.

Distracted Driver- Jack Powers

Fun fact, when I first saw this artist, he was playing drums with his band U might be Mine bussing in Red Bank NJ. But somewhat recently, I found out he has songs out as a solo artist, and they’re fantastic! This particular track is fun and lush. The song also happens to be full of distortion, harmonies, and these great compressed drums that rush over you like waves over your toes.

Stray Italian Greyhound- Vienna Teng

When first listening, my immediate response was “this is so music theatre”, yet it has this almost Frou Frou/ Imogen heap type of electronic layering throughout the background. It makes you wonder what sort of new world broadway experience is about to happen. The song works in these catchy rhythmic deliveries, that turn this deeply sad song into a total bop. You’re transfixed, yet miserable, in the best way.
