Hi,. 

My name is Kai.
I’m a 25 year old writer, musician and general maker of things. I also haven’t posted in a while. I know the people who follow me here don’t really mind all that much, but I still wanted to acknowledge it and have a chat with you about what I’ve been up to. 

I originally wanted to make a video about my plans for 2021, but this is becoming more of a chatty video, where I’ll answer some general questions that people might have about what’s up and what’s to be expected (especially after the really wild year we just had).

Middle

What have I been up to?

I’ve been growing a beard, I’ve been working basically full-time hours at a French restaurant in the middle of Philly, and also started renting a little studio space to work on music and writing. I’ll probably talk about that some other time, but for now, I just wanted to say that it happened. 

What are my goals for the rest of 2021?

My main goal for the year is to start working towards developing a career in media. I’ve always loved telling stories and finding cool ways to attach meaning through subtext, so moving forward in a life based around that sounds great. I would love to have a job that lets me work more heavily on that by the end of the year.

Writing songs/ stories/ poetry has always been a terrifically rewarding experience, so I guess the second goal is to keep riding that feeling, and get even better at doing these things.

How is work going?

Work is going fine. I feel good at my job, I even find joy in the daily burden of it all, yet it continues to be a means to an end. I’m scared of the idea of how I would feel about work if it should become something I see as permanent.

I like the narrative of myself as this server with a deep voice and the dark circles under his eyes, tirelessly working towards his dream of becoming a writer and creative, becoming better and better all with this humbling day to day existence. If I find myself living outside of that narrative, I imagine I’ll find another, but currently that dream makes me happy.

What is Late Nights up to?

Late Nights is the band that I sing and play bass in. We’re fairly inactive right now, greatly in part because of covid, and also because I’m starting to feel really worried about how tricky it is to find us online. I know that there are solutions to this issue, but the nerves really hit me whenever I have to face the amount of work that goes into making an album/ ep/ record come to life.

So, in summary, the band as individuals is doing okay, but we have some administrative and seo issues to deal with, and it’s a bit of a sore subject for me.

What am I listening to?

Currently I’m listening to a lot of The Wonder Years, Frank Turner, Soccer Mommy, Phoebe Bridgers, a fair bit of Art Blakey, The Gaslight Anthem, and a whopping butt load of Prince.

I find myself listening to music to soothe myself most of the time, so I go back to a lot of these and to albums I listened to growing up. I feel like i’m going to start listening to a lot of funk soon.
